1. See cleft sentences in context

“I didn’t choose the course because it was cheap. What I wanted was a clear plan. It was the teacher’s feedback that helped me improve, and it was after the mock exam that I finally understood what I needed to work on.”
Meaning in simple Italian

What I wanted was… = quello che volevo era… / mette enfasi sull’oggetto o idea principale.

It was the teacher’s feedback that… = è stato il feedback del docente a… / mette enfasi su chi o cosa ha causato il risultato.

It was after the mock exam that… = è stato dopo il mock exam che… / mette enfasi sul momento.

2. The complete cleft sentence map

Core idea:

Cleft sentences split one normal sentence into two parts so that one piece of information becomes stronger, clearer and more emphatic.

It-cleft: emphasise person/thing

It + be + focus + who/that…

Normal: Robert helped me improve.

Cleft: It was Robert who helped me improve.

Italian trap: Non dire Was Robert that helped me. Serve It was Robert who/that….

It-cleft: emphasise time/place/reason

It + be + focus + that…

It was in Rome that I started learning English seriously.

It was because of the exam that I became more disciplined.

Italian trap: In formal English, that works well for time/place/reason emphasis. Avoid overusing when/where in clefts.

What-cleft: emphasise action/idea

What + clause + be + focus

What I need is more speaking practice.

What surprised me was the difficulty of the listening test.

Italian trap: Non tradurre letteralmente “quello che” con the what. Usa What I need….

All / The thing / The reason clefts

All I want is… / The thing that… / The reason why…

All I want is to feel confident when I speak.

The reason why I chose this course is the individual feedback.

Italian trap: Avoid The reason why… is because…. Use The reason why… is that… or simply The reason is….
Golden rules:
  • It was + focus + who/that… → emphasise person, object, place, time, reason.
  • What + subject + verb + be + focus → emphasise the thing/action/idea.
  • All I want/need/did was… → strong emotional or focused emphasis.
  • Use clefts in B2/C1 writing to sound more controlled, persuasive and natural.

Quello di cui ho bisogno è più speaking. The what I need is more speaking. What I need is more speaking practice.

Tutto quello che voglio è parlare con sicurezza. All what I want is speak confidently. All I want is to speak confidently.

4. When to use cleft sentences

Cleft sentences are useful when the information is not just factual, but important, surprising, contrastive or persuasive.

Correction/contrast
It wasn’t the grammar that was hard; it was the timing.
Persuasion
What students need is clear feedback and regular practice.
Storytelling
It was only after the mock exam that I realised my weakness.
Natural contrast:
I didn’t fail because I didn’t study. What caused the problem was the listening section.

5. Common mistakes

❌ Was my teacher who helped me.

In English, cleft sentences need an introductory It.

✅ It was my teacher who helped me.
❌ The what I need is more practice.

What already means “the thing that”. Do not add “the”.

✅ What I need is more practice.
❌ The reason why I improved is because I practised.

Avoid double reason structure. Use is that or a noun phrase.

✅ The reason why I improved is that I practised every day.
❌ All what I want is pass the exam.

Use All I want is to + verb.

✅ All I want is to pass the exam.
