Core idea:Idea centrale:

Mixed conditionals combine two different time periods in one sentence. They are useful when a past event affects the present, or when a present/general situation explains a past result.I mixed conditionals combinano due tempi diversi nella stessa frase. Sono utili quando un evento passato influenza il presente, oppure quando una situazione presente/generale spiega un risultato passato.

Past condition → present resultCondizione passata → risultato presente

If + past perfect, would + base verb

If I had studied medicine, I would be a doctor now.

If we had left earlier, we would be at home now.

Italian trap: Non dire If I would have studied, I would be…. Dopo if usa had + participio.

Past condition → present continuous resultCondizione passata → risultato presente progressivo

If + past perfect, would be + -ing

If I had gone to bed earlier, I wouldn’t be feeling so tired now.

If she had accepted the job, she would be working abroad now.

Italian trap: Usa would be + -ing quando il risultato è in corso adesso.

Present/general condition → past resultCondizione presente/generale → risultato passato

If + past simple, would have + past participle

If I were more organised, I would have finished the report yesterday.

If she spoke English better, she would have got the job.

Italian trap: Qui la condizione è una caratteristica generale, non un evento passato.

Could have / might have in mixed conditionalsCould have / might have nei mixed conditionals

could have = sarebbe stato possibilemight have = forse sarebbe successo

If I were better at networking, I might have found a new job sooner.

If we had invested earlier, we could be growing faster now.

Italian trap: Might have non è certezza: significa “forse sarebbe successo”.
Useful formula:Formula utile:
  • If + past perfect → would + base verb = un passato diverso cambierebbe il presente.
  • If + past simple → would have + past participle = una caratteristica presente/generale avrebbe cambiato un risultato passato.
  • would be + -ing = risultato immaginario in corso adesso.
  • now / today / these days aiutano spesso a riconoscere il risultato presente.
