“When I arrived at the station, it was raining heavily. I had forgotten my umbrella, so I decided I would take a taxi. I had forgotten my umbrella, so I decided I would take a taxi. This time tomorrow, I will be flying to London, and by Friday I will have finished the presentation.”
Meaning in simple ItalianSignificato in italiano semplice

will be flying = azione in corso in un momento futuro.

will have finished = azione completata entro una scadenza futura.

2. The complete advanced tense map2. La mappa completa dei tempi avanzati

Core idea:Idea centrale:

Advanced tense control is not about memorising names. It is about choosing the tense that shows the relationship between events: before, during, after, planned, predicted or completed by a deadline.

Narrative sequenceSequenza narrativa

past simple / past continuous / past perfect

I arrived late because I had missed the bus.

She was talking on the phone when I walked in.

Past habits and statesAbitudini e stati passati

used to / would / past simple

I used to live in Rome.

When we were children, we would spend every summer by the sea.

Italian trap: Would per abitudini passate funziona bene con azioni ripetute, ma non con stati: I would live in Rome non va bene se intendi “vivevo”.

Future plans and predictionsPiani e previsioni future

will / going to / present continuous

I think it will be difficult.

Look at those clouds. It is going to rain.

I am meeting Robert at 4.

Italian trap: Non usare will per tutto.

Advanced future perspectiveProspettiva futura avanzata

future continuous / future perfect

This time tomorrow, I will be travelling to London.

By the end of the course, you will have completed five mock exams.

Italian trap: By Friday spesso richiede future perfect se parli di qualcosa completato entro quel momento.
Fast decision rule:Regola decisionale rapida:
  • Story order: past perfect = before the past moment.
  • Background action: past continuous = in progress around the past moment.
  • Future arrangement: present continuous = fixed plan with time/place.
  • Future deadline: future perfect = completed by a future time.

5. Common mistakes5. Errori comuni

❌ When I arrived, she talked on the phone.

This sounds like a completed action, not a background action.

✅ When I arrived, she was talking on the phone.
❌ I was very tired because I worked all day.

If the work happened before that past moment and explains the result, use past perfect continuous.

✅ I was very tired because I had been working all day.
❌ I will meet her at 6. We arranged it yesterday.

For a fixed arrangement, present continuous is usually more natural.

✅ I am meeting her at 6. We arranged it yesterday.
❌ By June I will finish the course.

With “by” + deadline, use future perfect when something will be completed before that time.
