2. The complete Past Perfect Continuous map

Core idea:

Past Perfect Continuous shows that an activity was in progress for some time before another past moment. It often explains the reason for a past result.

Positive form

had been + verb-ing

I had been studying for three hours before the lesson started.

They had been waiting for twenty minutes when the teacher arrived.

Italian trap: Non dire I had studying. Serve had been + -ing.

Duration before a past moment

had been + -ing + for/since

She had been learning English for six months before she took the test.

We had been working on the project since Monday.

Italian trap: for = durata; since = punto di inizio.

Visible past result

result + because + had been + -ing

He was tired because he had been training all morning.

Her pronunciation improved because she had been practising every day.

Italian trap: Se vuoi spiegare la causa continuata di un risultato passato, usa il continuous.

Negative and questions

hadn’t been + -ing / had + subject + been + -ing?

I hadn’t been sleeping well, so I felt exhausted.

Had you been studying before the test?

Italian trap: Non usare did: Did you had been studying? → Had you been studying?
Formula d’oro:
  • Subject + had been + verb-ing
  • I had been studying for two hours.
  • Use it for duration before a past point or cause of a past result.
  • Past Perfect Simple = completed earlier action. Past Perfect Continuous = duration/process before a past point.
