1. See the difference in context

“When I arrived at the exam centre, I had already finished my revision notes, but I was exhausted because I had been studying all night. I felt confident because I had completed several mock tests, but my eyes were tired because I had been looking at the screen for hours.”

2. The complete comparison map

Core idea:

Both forms look back from a past moment. The difference is the focus: completion vs duration/process.

Past Perfect Simple

had + past participle

I had finished the essay before the lesson started.

She had left before I called.

Use it for: completed earlier actions, results, number of completed things.

Past Perfect Continuous

had been + verb-ing

I had been writing the essay for two hours.

She was tired because she had been working all day.

Use it for: duration, process, repeated effort, visible result.

Completed result

had finished / had done / had written

I had written three essays by Friday.

They had completed the course before the exam.

Italian trap: If you mention a number or completed result, the simple form is usually better.

Duration before past result

had been + -ing + for/since

I had been studying for hours, so I was exhausted.

They had been waiting since 9 a.m.

Italian trap: With for/since and a process, continuous often sounds more natural.
Decision rule:
  • What was completed? → Past Perfect Simple: I had finished the test.
  • How long was it happening? → Past Perfect Continuous: I had been working for two hours.
  • Visible past result? → Continuous often fits: She was tired because she had been studying.
  • Number / quantity completed? → Simple often fits: She had written three reports.

4. Simple vs Continuous: fast visual contrast

Past Perfect Simple
Completed earlier action
I had finished the report.
Past Perfect Continuous
Duration/process before past point
I had been writing for two hours.
Exam clue
Number/result = simple
for/since/visible result = continuous
Contrast:
I had read the chapter, so I understood the lesson. I was tired because I had been reading for three hours.

5. Common mistakes

❌ I had been finished the task.

Non puoi usare been + participio qui. Se il focus è completamento, usa Past Perfect Simple.

✅ I had finished the task.
❌ I had studied since three hours.

Con durata + processo, usa continuous e for.

✅ I had been studying for three hours.
❌ She had been writing three emails.

Con un numero di cose completate, spesso serve la forma simple.

✅ She had written three emails.
❌ He was sweaty because he had run.

Possibile, ma se vuoi sottolineare il processo che causa il risultato visibile, continuous è più naturale.

✅ He was sweaty because he had been running.
