Core idea:Idea centrale:

The second conditional describes unreal, imaginary or unlikely situations in the present or future. The “past” verb after if does not mean past time: it creates distance from reality.Il second conditional descrive situazioni irreali, immaginarie o improbabili nel presente o nel futuro. Il verbo al “past” dopo if non indica il passato: crea distanza dalla realtà.

Basic formForma base

If + past simple, would + base verb

If I had more money, I would buy a new laptop.

If she knew the answer, she would tell us.

Italian trap: Non usare would nella parte con if: If I would have… → If I had…

Imaginary presentPresente immaginario

If I lived / had / knew…

If I lived in London, I would speak English every day.

If I had more confidence, I would speak more in class.

Italian trap: Anche se parli del presente, usa il past simple dopo if: If I had, non If I have.

AdviceConsigli

If I were you, I would…

If I were you, I would take the exam in December.

If I were you, I would practise listening every day.

Italian trap: Per consigli, If I were you è molto naturale. If I was you si sente, ma were è più corretto/formale.

Could / might instead of wouldCould / might al posto di would

would / could / might + base verb

If I had a car, I could drive to work.

If we had more time, we might visit another city.

Italian trap: Dopo would/could/might usa sempre il verbo base: would go, non would went.
Useful punctuation rule:Regola utile sulla punteggiatura:
  • If I had time, I would help you. = comma after the if-clause at the beginning.
  • I would help you if I had time. = no comma is usually needed.
